In an effort to steer the Marvel Cinematic Universe back on course after a few uneven years, Kevin Feige is scaling back production. One major shift in Marvel’s new approach is on the television side — placing greater focus on shows that can extend beyond one season. While the number of new series being greenlit will be smaller, Marvel isn’t slowing down its Disney+ output entirely. In fact, Daredevil: Born Again has already been renewed for a third season, sparking questions about which other characters might return. One fan-favorite possibility is Hawkeye, and Jeremy Renner recently shared an optimistic update about the show’s future.
Speaking with The Playlist, Renner commented on a potential second season:
“We got to where we’re trying to do the second season,” he said. “And I think I’ll get strong enough to be able to do it. And we’ll work it out. It’s gonna be great.”
Why Hawkeye Deserves Another Season
When Marvel was racing to fill out its Disney+ library during the height of the streaming wars, the results were mixed. Yet, one undeniable highlight was Hawkeye Season 1 — a smaller, street-level adventure that gave the original Avenger his first real spotlight. The Christmas backdrop and grounded storytelling offered a refreshing change from Marvel’s usual world-ending plots. Renner’s easy chemistry with co-star Hailee Steinfeld (as Kate Bishop) gave the series heart and humor in equal measure.
Clint Barton remains one of the few original Avengers still active in the MCU. Renner has joked that Hawkeye “never really retires” — and that stubborn streak makes it hard to imagine the MCU without him. Meanwhile, Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop has quickly become a fan favorite, earning her place in the next generation of heroes. Even if The Marvels’ tease of a Young Avengers lineup doesn’t materialize, Hawkeye Season 2 would be a natural way to continue their stories.
With Marvel building a new “street-level” corner that includes Daredevil: Born Again and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, bringing Barton and Bishop back would make perfect sense. Neither Renner nor Steinfeld has been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday yet, which could make Disney+ the ideal platform for their return.
What’s Holding It Up?
According to Renner, corporate budget tightening delayed the follow-up. Earlier this year, he revealed that Disney initially offered him half of his Season 1 salary to return for a second season — a deal he refused. Still, he’s maintained interest in playing Hawkeye again, and his latest remarks suggest meaningful progress is finally being made.
If Renner’s enthusiasm is any indication, Hawkeye Season 2 is quietly moving forward. And if the show were dead, he likely wouldn’t be teasing it at all.
When Could It Happen?
There’s still no production timeline in place, meaning filming isn’t set to begin anytime soon. If development continues smoothly, Hawkeye Season 2 could start production sometime next year, setting it up for a possible 2027 release. Of course, timing might depend on how Marvel plans to conclude the Multiverse Saga. It’s possible the studio could delay the show until after Avengers: Secret Wars to align with broader storylines.
For now, fans can take comfort in knowing that both Renner and Steinfeld seem open to returning — and that Hawkeye’s arrow might not have hit its final target just yet.
