RDJ’s Doctor Doom Finally Revealed in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer at CinemaCon

Marvel Studios is going all-in with Avengers: Doomsday, positioning it as the biggest crossover event since Avengers: Endgame hit theaters in 2019. After a stretch of mixed results, the studio is clearly aiming to reset the conversation with something massive—pulling together the Avengers, New Avengers, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four into one film. A few teaser clips had already been floating around in theaters earlier this year, but at CinemaCon, Marvel finally gave audiences a real look, and everything about it points to a full-scale, all-hands-on-deck showdown.

Doctor Doom Receives Full Look at Cinema Con

According to a breakdown from The Wrap, the CinemaCon-exclusive trailer leaned heavily on familiar faces while also bringing some long-awaited characters into the mix. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, alongside Chris Evans as Steve Rogers. The footage also reintroduces Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique. One of the standout moments shows Thor and Steve coming face-to-face again, with the trailer closing on a moment that flips expectations—Mjolnir leaves Thor’s hand and answers Steve’s call.

The trailer opens on a darker note, with a warning voiceover: “Something’s coming. Something we may not be able to deter,” playing over the ruins of the X-Mansion. From there, we get a glimpse of Doctor Doom, scarred and kneeling, setting the tone for just how serious the threat is. Thor admits he’s faced enemies before, but nothing like this—suggesting that everything his allies sacrificed could mean nothing if they don’t stand together now.

Action-wise, it doesn’t hold back. Thor charges at Doom with Stormbreaker, only to have the attack stopped instantly. The Fantastic Four finally cross paths with the MCU’s main heroes. Shang-Chi clashes with Gambit. Mystique shapeshifts into Yelena Belova. Then comes the emotional punch—Steve approaches Thor, casually says, “Hey pal,” and before Thor can even process it, Mjolnir lifts and flies straight into Steve’s hand.

New Footage was Part of Disney’s CinemaCon Panel

The footage was part of Marvel’s presentation during the Walt Disney Studios panel, led by Kevin Feige. He described Avengers: Doomsday as the defining chapter of the Multiverse Saga, tying together everything that’s come since Endgame while also circling back to the roots of the X-Men. The Russo brothers—Anthony Russo and Joe Russo—are back in the director’s chair, reuniting with Evans and pushing the franchise into its next phase.

Even with all that momentum, the release date isn’t budging. Avengers: Doomsday is still set to hit theaters on December 18, going head-to-head with Dune: Part Three. That’s a big deal, especially since Dune has locked down IMAX screens for three weeks, meaning Marvel’s biggest film won’t have access to that premium format during its opening stretch. Instead, Marvel is leaning into alternatives like ScreenX and 4DX, along with a new “Infinity Vision” theater certification aimed at helping audiences find the biggest and best screens available.

As for the cast, it’s stacked in a way that feels almost unreal. Hemsworth returns as Thor, Anthony Mackie leads as Captain America, and Tom Hiddleston is back as Loki. The X-Men lineup includes Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellen as Magneto, while the Fantastic Four are led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards. And in a twist that’s already getting people talking, Robert Downey Jr. steps into the role of Doctor Doom.

Everything about this project screams scale. Whether it delivers on that promise is the big question—but if the CinemaCon footage is any indication, Marvel is swinging as hard as it possibly can.
