Marvel Studios Fired Writers and Directors of Daredevil: Born Again

by Larry Lease

The forthcoming Daredevil: Born Again series for Disney+ is currently undergoing significant behind-the-scenes alterations. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has removed Chris Ord and Matt Corman, who served as the head writers for Daredevil: Born Again. The departure of these writers reportedly occurred in September, and the directors of the Disney+ original series were also replaced as part of what is being termed a “creative reboot” of the show. Marvel is now actively searching for new writers and directors, while Charlie Cox is set to reprise his role as Daredevil, and Vincent D’Onofrio will return as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.

Daredevil: Born Again going back to the drawing board

Production on Daredevil: Born Again had come to a halt in June due to a writers’ strike, but it appears that the strike has been resolved with an agreement between both parties. The quest for new writers and directors is just one aspect of the changes happening with the Daredevil reboot. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has reportedly chosen to take a different direction with the series, which was originally conceived as a legal procedural distinct from its predecessor on Netflix. According to THR, “Marvel, after greenlighting the concept, found itself needing to rethink the original intention of the show.”

Marvel TV is currently revamping its approach to content creation. The studio is reportedly placing a greater emphasis on TV showrunners for its upcoming streaming projects, diverging from its reliance on movie executives. This shift was prompted by fan and critic desires for more interconnected storytelling and deeper character development. At present, the limited series format is being reconsidered as part of the broader retooling process.

When discussing the role of showrunners, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, commented, “It’s a term we’ve not only grown comfortable with but also learned to embrace… We need executives that are dedicated to this medium, that are going to focus on streaming, focus on television because they are two different forms.” He added, “We’re trying to marry the Marvel culture with the traditional television culture. It comes down to, ‘How can we tell stories in television that honor what’s so great about the source material?'”

Moving forward, shows could receive multiple seasons

Another forthcoming change is the potential for shows to receive multiple seasons. For instance, Loki is the sole Marvel series on Disney+ to secure a second season, which premiered last week. Marvel is embracing the concept of “event television,” with some shows, like Secret Invasion, still receiving the limited series treatment. Moreover, fans have expressed a desire for series like Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight to have additional seasons, which would allow the creative teams to delve deeper into character development, alleviating concerns about waiting for their next appearances on the big screen. Ms. Marvel is set to join Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau in The Marvels next month.

Despite the suspension of production on Daredevil: Born Again earlier this year due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, Charlie Cox’s next appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been confirmed to occur prior to his solo series. Marvel has announced that Cox’s Daredevil will return in the series titled Echo. A synopsis filed with the United States Copyright Office by Marvel Studios provides a glimpse into the show’s premise:

“Marvel Studios presents Echo, in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as the successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) aka Kingpin. In the first episode, we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles.”
