All the Major Revelations From the FTC vs. Xbox Court Document Leaks

by Larry Lease

It appears that Microsoft has faced one of the most significant leaks in its history, revealing much of its plans for the future. Let’s break down what’s been unveiled from the documents leaked online.

According to a three-year-old document from Bethesda’s release schedule prior to Microsoft acquiring ZeniMax Media in 2021, it’s evident that we’re on the brink of witnessing remastered versions of some cult classic games. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Fallout 3 are both on the list, much to the excitement of fans.

Additionally, there’s speculation around the anticipated revenue from Starfield, which was forecasted to be a whopping $900 million. However, it’s worth noting that this forecast came out before Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda’s parent company, making the current validity of this information questionable.

Microsoft is not one to rest on its laurels. Leaked details indicate that a mid-generation console refresh for the Xbox Series X/S is just around the corner, launching next year. But the tech juggernaut has bigger plans, aiming to launch a next-generation Xbox console by 2028. Described as a “next-generation hybrid game platform,” this console’s development kits are rumored to release in 2027.

Possible future in handheld devices

There’s also intriguing chatter about a “thin OS” for sub-$99 “consumer or handheld devices,” hinting at Microsoft’s potential dive into handheld devices dedicated solely to cloud games.

The trial documents reveal some bold ambitions of Microsoft. Phil Spencer, the face of Xbox, had his sights set on some of the biggest names in the gaming industry. From considering 100 developers, the list was narrowed down to eight prime candidates which included industry titans like Sega, Square Enix, and Zynga. But the most surprising revelation was the interest in Nintendo, the legendary studio behind franchises like Mario and Zelda. Acquiring such a behemoth would have indeed been a “career moment.”

Spencer’s email from August 2020 also revealed his interest in acquiring Valve and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which would mean Xbox potentially owning famed developers like NetherRealm and Rocksteady.

Beyond the new console ambitions, Microsoft has been busy conceptualizing new gaming hardware. Concepts from May 2022 display ideas for unique devices such as a one-hand controller and a mobile controller reminiscent of the Backbone or Razer Kishi. Furthermore, there’s an under-development game controller codenamed Sebile, which promises direct-to-cloud connectivity.

2022 threw Microsoft some challenges

Phil Spencer’s email after the PS5’s technical specifications were made public in March 2020 is intriguing. He expressed his confidence in the Xbox Series X and S, suggesting that Microsoft’s offering was superior not only in hardware but also in software and services.

The year 2022 posed challenges for Microsoft as key games like Starfield, Redfall, and Stalker 2 faced delays. This created a huge gap in its game lineup, leading to a scramble to secure third-party deals and plug the content void.

Some intriguing notes include Microsoft’s comment on Baldur’s Gate 3, Spencer’s intention to pursue FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, and the hint that Red Dead Redemption 2 might receive a ninth-generation console update.

The burning question remains – who leaked these precious details? Contrary to popular speculation, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has cleared itself of any involvement, pointing fingers back at Microsoft for the document leaks.

In conclusion, while the leaks have unveiled a treasure trove of information, it’s essential to approach it with caution. Some details might be outdated or might have evolved. Nevertheless, for gaming enthusiasts and industry watchers, the next few years seem packed with excitement and anticipation. Only time will reveal how many of these plans come to fruition.
