Scream 6 Review

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of production company Radio Silence, Scream 6 picks up one year after the events of its predecessor, Scream 5, and sees the core four survivors, Sam Carpenter, Tara Carpenter, Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Chad Meeks-Martin, now living in New York City for college. However, their peaceful existence is soon disrupted by the emergence of a new Ghostface killer, who targets the “core four” and their loved ones.

Scream 6 keeps the use of meta-horror alive

Moreover, one of the defining elements of the Scream franchise is its use of meta-horror, and Scream 6 is no exception. Moreover, the film references past horror films and the Scream franchise itself, as the characters are aware of the rules of horror movies and use this knowledge to try and survive. The film’s direction and cinematography, handled by Brett Jutkiewicz, also play a crucial role in setting the mood and tone of the film. The use of lighting, camera angles, and set design effectively create a sense of tension and fear, while the film’s sound design and music add to the horror.

Returning characters in Scream 6 include Gale Weathers, played by Courteney Cox, and Kirby Reed, played by Hayden Panettiere. Both actors deliver confident and comfortable performances as their respective characters, with their return to the franchise being a welcome addition. Moreover, new characters in the film include the main villain, who is a copycat killer seeking to frame Sam for the murders, and several other college students who are caught up in the chaos. The performances of the actors are strong and effectively bring their characters to life, contributing to the overall story in different ways.

Latest chapter in the horror franchise comes with plenty of easter eggs

The use of meta-humor and Easter eggs in Scream 6 adds an extra layer of depth and self-awareness to the film, and the references to past Scream films and horror tropes add to the nostalgia factor of the film, while the meta-humor adds a comedic element to the story. The film’s action sequences are well-directed and visually stunning, effectively balancing horror and comedy.

Overall, Scream 6 is a thrilling and intense horror film that fits well into the franchise’s formula while also adding fresh perspective and characters. While it fumbles the reason for Sidney Prescott’s absence, the film proves that there’s a future for the franchise with or without its original final girl by giving us strong connections to the new Core Four. With a perfect blend of meta-horror, nostalgia, and brutal horror, Scream 6 is a must-see for fans of the franchise and horror lovers alike.
