Patrick Dempsey, who left his mark on the Scream franchise with his role as Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3, is ready to take another stab at the slasher series. He only appeared in one film back in 2000, but it was enough for fans to keep pushing for his return. Detective Kincaid played a crucial role as the homicide investigator piecing together the Stab 3 murders, growing closer to Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott along the way. By the end of Scream 3, Kincaid and Sidney are pretty close, even joining Gale and Dewey for a double date after surviving Ghostface’s latest spree.
Patrick Dempsey Ready to Return to Scream Franchise
When Scream was rebooted in 2022, it hinted that things went well between Kincaid and Sidney, suggesting he may even be her husband, though we never actually saw him on screen. By Scream VI, he was referenced again as being “in hiding,” but fans are eager to see the Grey’s Anatomy star step back into Kincaid’s shoes. Neve Campbell notably sat Scream VI out due to a salary dispute, but with Campbell back for Scream 7, Dempsey might just be the perfect addition to reunite Sidney with Kincaid on screen.
The latest Scream installment has faced its own off-screen drama, as its storyline is expected to focus on the Carpenter sisters (played by Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera), who are still dealing with their ties to original killer Billy Loomis. However, there’s been a shake-up: Barrera was dropped from the film due to her political statements, and Ortega has exited due to “scheduling conflicts.” Despite the upheaval, Campbell’s confirmed return could open the door for a long-awaited reunion with Dempsey.
Dempsey has teased his possible return
Dempsey recently hinted at his potential return during an interview with the Today show. “I’m waiting on the script,” he teased. “There has been a conversation about it. I haven’t seen anything yet, so, we’ll see what happens. But, Neve was actually on Grey’s Anatomy as my sister, and we go way back to when we did Scream 3 in ’99, ’98.”
As he put it, “It’s always good to have a job,” playfully hinting at his interest in coming back to Scream. While Dempsey’s return isn’t locked down yet, fans are also holding out hope that Courtney Cox will be back to complete her iconic run as Gale Weathers, having been a staple in the franchise since Wes Craven’s 1996 original.
With Scream 7 set to hit theaters in February 2026, it’s only a matter of time until we find out if Dempsey and Campbell will once again team up to face Ghostface, picking up right where they left off.
