The Mandalorian Season 3 Premiere: Mando Seeks Redemption in Action-Packed Episode

by Larry Lease

The Mandalorian Season 3 begins with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) seeking to regain his lost honor after breaking the rules of the Watch by removing his helmet during the rescue and adoption of Grogu. In order to redeem himself, he must bathe in the Living Waters of Mandalore. It’s an almost impossible feat considering the planet’s surface was destroyed by the Empire. The episode is action-packed, featuring monsters, blaster fights, and space dogfights. But its short runtime of only 37 minutes leaves little room for character development.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Reunites Grogu and Mando

In “The Apostate,” the Armorer (Emily Swallow) creates a new helmet for a foundling who takes the oath of Mandalore before being attacked by a crocodile-like creature. Mando saves the day by using his sleek Naboo N-1 Starfighter to destroy the creature. He then shows the Armorer a piece of crystallized glass from the surface of Mandalore as proof that he has bathed in the Living Waters, which will redeem him in the eyes of the Watch.

Moreover, Mando and Grogu land on a thriving Nevarro, where they are greeted by Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), who is now the High Magistrate. They are interrupted by pirates led by Vane (Marti Matulis), but Mando and Greef quickly dispatch them. Greef offers Mando the position of marshal, but he declines, stating that he needs a trustworthy droid. Mando attempts to reactivate IG-11, but the droid defaults to its original programming and attacks Grogu. Mando destroys IG-11 with a statue and sets out to repair him.

Strong lack of character development

Moreover, Mando and Grogu are attacked by Vane and his men while flying to Kalevala. Mando outmaneuvers and destroys their fighters before heading to a Mandalorian castle on a cliff, where Bo-Katan (Katee Sackoff) sits on a desolate throne. Meanwhile, Mando tells her his plan to bathe in the Living Waters, but she scolds him, stating that the planet is poisoned and that there is nothing magic about the mines.

While the episode of The Mandalorian is visually impressive, with great creature effects and action scenes, the lack of character development is disappointing. The short runtime doesn’t leave enough room for the characters to grow, and the whole episode feels robotic as a result. However, it sets up an intriguing storyline for the rest of the season, as Mando seeks to redeem himself and regain his honor by leading the liberation of Mandalore.
