Saturday Night’s Main Event kicked off with a high-profile showcase bout between NXT Champion Oba Femi and Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, but the match ended in a disqualification after Drew McIntyre made his presence felt. McIntyre’s interference was short-lived, however, as both “The Ruler” and “The American Nightmare” quickly neutralized him.
NXT Champion Oba Femi Was a Major Challenge for Rhodes
Femi earned the right to face Rhodes by dethroning Ricky Saints at WWE NXT Deadline last weekend and made his intentions clear before the bell, warning Rhodes that his time was over and that a new era had begun. The two locked up to start the match, but Rhodes struggled early to gain control, unable to take the powerful NXT Champion off his feet.
Rhodes attempted his signature drop-down punch, but Femi caught him by the throat before he could recover and delivered an Irish Curse backbreaker. A powerslam attempt from Rhodes went nowhere, but momentum shifted when he sidestepped Femi and sent him shoulder-first into the ring post. Rhodes connected with a Cody Cutter, though a second attempt backfired, sending Femi through the ropes to the floor.
Rhodes went airborne, but Femi cut him off with a stiff right hand. After sending Femi outside again, Rhodes followed up with a suicide dive. On the floor, Rhodes charged for a spear but was met with a brutal uppercut, sending both men crashing over the commentary desk. Rhodes was left bleeding near his ear as the action continued.
Match ended in DQ Thanks to Drew McIntyre
Back in the ring, Rhodes nailed a top-rope Cody Cutter, but Femi powered out at the count. Moments later, Drew McIntyre emerged through the crowd and attacked Rhodes, forcing the referee to call for the bell.
Femi immediately confronted “The Scottish Psychopath,” shoving him to the mat. McIntyre then ate a Cody Cutter from Rhodes, followed by a thunderous chokeslam from Femi. In a show of mutual respect, Rhodes handed Femi his NXT Championship and raised his arm as the two stood tall in the ring.
