Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Becoming Second-Lowest Rated MCU Film on RT

by Larry Lease

The Rotten Tomatoes score for Ant-Man is dwindling as the third installment, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has received a lukewarm reception from critics. Although the film received a “fresh” score of 63 percent from some critics upon its review embargo lift, the overall score has fallen to a “rotten” 55 percent based on 115 reviews at the time of writing. This places the movie as the second-lowest rated film in the 31-movie Marvel Cinematic Universe, with only Eternals, which received a “rotten” score of 47 percent, ranking lower. The score may still change as more reviews are added. The movie is set to hit theaters on February 17th.

ComicBook critic Jenna Anderson wrote about Quantumania:

“is not only the third ‘act’ in the almost decade-long Marvel Cinematic Universe journey of Ant-Man, but it is a forecast of what’s on the horizon — kicking off Phase 5 of the franchise’s storytelling, and fully teeing up its biggest Big Bad yet, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). It would be a lot to ask any of Marvel’s existing superhero franchises to carry that latter burden, but in the hands of Quantumania, it proves to be a fun challenge in nearly every way. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is an eccentric and essential spectacle, which further expands the possibilities of what the MCU’s tentpole projects can still be capable of.”

Peyton Reed, the director of the 2015 film Ant-Man and its 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp, returns with a follow-up that takes place after the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. In this latest installment, titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the main characters Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) journey into the Quantum Realm, a sub-atomic dimension where Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) was once trapped for three decades. There, they discover that Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), a master of time who has control over both time and the multiverse, is also trapped. The Ant-Family must find a way to deal with this powerful enemy.

Jonathan Majors portrayal received high praise

Jonathan Majors’ portrayal of Kang, a variant of his He Who Remains character from Loki, received high praise in reviews, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was likened to Star Wars. One reviewer described the Quantum Realm as a blend of “A Bug’s Life” and “Return of the Jedi,” while others applauded the film’s psychedelic world-building as it takes place entirely in this dimension. However, some critics felt that the movie’s shift to a larger-scale adventure came at the cost of the franchise’s scrappy charm. For more reviews of Quantumania, follow the link provided.

The film, which stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, and Jonathan Major, is set to open exclusively in theaters on February 17th and marks the third installment in the Ant-Man series.
