Spaceballs 2

It’s official: 38 years after the original, Spaceballs is blasting back into theaters in 2027. Even better, 99-year-old Mel Brooks will don Yogurt’s robes once more—because who wouldn’t want a little more Schwartz in their life? And yes, Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are on board to reprise Lone Star and Dark Helmet, respectively.

First Teaser Drew Attention Across Social Media

The first teaser has already hit social media, complete with a tongue-in-cheek crawl that skewers everything from Star Wars and Harry Potter to the DCU and the Alien franchise. It closes with Brooks sporting a cheeky “Spaceballs: The Sweatshirt” sweatshirt, declaring:

“After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead, we’re making this movie. May the Schwartz be with you.”

Moreover, Josh Greenbaum will direct, with a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Gad—whose involvement was teased last year—is expected to appear, though his character remains a mystery, and plot details are still under wraps. The original 1987 cult classic, Brooks’s first foray into feature-length parody, grossed $40 million and spawned a devoted fanbase desperate for a follow-up. Naturally, the big question on everyone’s lips is: Will it be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money?

Spaceballs 2 Brings Back Rick Moranis

Joining the returning ensemble is Keke Palmer (hot off One of Them Days), though her role is likewise being kept secret. Amazon MGM’s press release—written in perfect Spaceballs style—jokes that the film has been described by those “who have not yet read the script” as:

Moreover, if this teaser and press release are any indication, expect a gleefully absurd marketing blitz in the months ahead—outrageous billboards, over-the-top commercials, surprise pop-ups, and of course, more merchandise than you can shake a Schwartz at.

We’ll keep you posted on every new development, including whether Daphne Zuniga will reprise Princess Vespa—and how the film might honor the late John Candy and Joan Rivers as Barf and Dot Matrix. In the meantime, if you’ve never experienced the original, it’s streaming now on Max—because clearly, it’s time to hit “play” and get ready for round two.
