While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not expanding as rapidly as initially believed, two new Marvel sequels are reportedly part of Marvel Studios‘ slate of films in production. The sequels for Eternals and Shang-Chi were never in doubt, but there has been little news about either project, apart from some internet rumors and a seemingly misguided comment by Patton Oswalt. However, according to a report from The Direct, both movies have been added to Marvel Studios’ production calendar. This move makes sense, given where these two movies are expected to fit in the MCU’s future.
Unclear where Marvel Studios will put these films on the release schedule
The question is where exactly these two movies will fit into Marvel’s tightly packed schedule. There has been no official confirmation. Previous hints suggest when and where both the Eternals and Shang-Chi could make their next appearance.
Eternals 2 is tricky to place in the timeline of Marvel’s upcoming movies. The cliffhanger ending of the debut of the superhero team in 2021 left unresolved stories that have nothing to do with the current MCU multiverse. Their next solo movie will likely not happen until after Avengers: Secret Wars brings the Multiverse Saga to a close.
Shang-Chi 2 could fit between Avengers movies
On the other hand, Shang-Chi 2 is a different prospect entirely. The Shang-Chi sequel, titled Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time, is likely to be slotted in between Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. As The Kang Dynasty brings about a collision of worlds that will signal the beginning of the end for the Multiverse. Secret Wars makes things right again, Shang-Chi’s sequel is likely to be directly linked to both of these movies.
There are still several years until the end of the Multiverse Saga. Many rumors of upcoming movies involving characters like Galactus or Mephisto, the Eternals and Shang-Chi will certainly have an important role to play in the future of the MCU. However, for more specific details, fans will have to be patient a little longer.
