Scream VI, the latest installment in the popular franchise, has recently been released, and like its predecessors, it features a significant twist in the third act. The film reveals the identities of the killers responsible for the new series of Ghostface attacks. Many fans had anticipated that these new killers would be connected to characters from previous Scream films, but their specific identities were not known when the writers began working on Scream VI. Be warned, major spoilers for Scream VI lie ahead.
The individuals behind the Ghostface killings in Scream VI are uncovered as the father, brother, and sister of Richie Kirsch, the killer from the 2022 Scream film. The trio sought vengeance for Richie’s death, which was caused by Sam. However, writer Guy Busick revealed in an interview with EW that this plot point wasn’t part of the original plan.
Scream VI original plan revolved around a non-personal reason
Busick shared that the initial concept revolved around a secret family with a slightly different motive for targeting Sam. He explained that the killers’ motives in the previous film were intellectual, while the new film needed something more primal and personal. The connection to Richie Kirsch was ultimately introduced, as it created a link between the two films that Busick and his writing partner, James Vanderbilt, had collaborated on.
Moreover, the decision to connect the two films made sense, as Busick and Vanderbilt had written both of the recent Scream movies. Moreover, the revelation of Richie’s family as the new killers was also consistent with the themes present in all of the Scream films directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson.
Every Scream film featured a killer seeking revenge for family reasons
Vanderbilt pointed out that nearly every Scream film featured a killer seeking revenge for family-related reasons, from Billy Loomis in the first film to Debbie Salt in the second, Roman Bridger in the third, and Jill Roberts in the fourth. The family-driven revenge motif in Scream VI aligned with the overall franchise, which made the writers excited to explore this direction and watch the three killers work together as a family.
Scream VI is now available for audiences to enjoy in theaters.
