The Hollywood studio has released Jesus Revolution, a movie that combines a true-life faith-based story with the counterculture of the late ’60s and ’70s hippie movement. The Erwin Brothers’ Kingdom Story Company produced this latest inspirational faith-based film, which is not limited to the South and Midwest box office. Unlike other films in this genre, the Erwins do not forcefully inject their message into their movies, but they do explore the role of belief in God when one is at their lowest point.
Jesus Revolution takes us back to the days of the hippy movement’s intersection with the Jesus Movement
Jesus Revolution, directed by Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle and scripted by Erwin and Jon Gunn, draws its key characters from real people, including Joel Courtney, who plays Greg Laurie, and Jonathan Roumie, who plays scruffy hippie Lonnie Frisbee. The film tells the story of how Frisbee takes Laurie under his wing and helps him overcome his troubled past by introducing him to Jesus.
The film explores the unlikely partnership that forms between Frisbee and Kelsey Grammer, who plays the conservative pastor Chuck Smith, as they merge the Jesus Revolution with Smith’s aging congregation. Despite the lack of diversity in the film, the cast delivers solid performances, with Roumie shining as the spirited hippie messenger of faith.
Director Erwin has wanted to bring this story to the screen for a long time, seeing it as a way to bridge the divide in today’s world. While the film has an old-fashioned feel, it is a heartfelt and sincere attempt to spread a positive message. The production design, costumes, and general look of the film transport viewers back to the era of the Jesus Revolution. Overall, Jesus Revolution is a “feel good” movie that has a place in the world.
