Just as you think you’ve seen it all in the Scream series, there’s a hint that one of the first Ghostface victims might make a surprising comeback. In March, Scream VI hit the box office with huge success, and it’s likely we’ll see another Ghostface (or two?) pursuing the survivors in a Scream VII. With this in mind, original Scream star Drew Barrymore has shared her thoughts on potentially reprising her role as Casey Becker, the teen who is brutally killed by the masked Ghostface in the film’s opening sequence.
Drew Barrymore open to returning to the Scream franchise
Casey’s death is still considered one of the most iconic scenes in horror movie history, so it would be a massive shock if a future Scream film were to reveal her survival. On The Drew Barrymore Show (via EW), Barrymore’s friend Ross Matthews brought up the possibility after discussing the success of Scream VI. Although Matthews’ suggestion seems lighthearted, Barrymore notes that “good writing” could be all it takes to make her return a reality.
As Matthews asked Barrymore, “I asked you if maybe your character, maybe, survived. You know, doctors can do amazing things! And you said, maybe there’s a chance she did survive. So, does this make you want to bring her back for Scream VII?”
“It’s funny. I’ve never thought of it this way, but I’m pretty sure a C-section is comparable to what happened to her,” Barrymore replies. “Like, literally. And I’m here! I’m fine! So, maybe Casey Becker will be okay.”
Scream VII likely to happen
When Matthews encouraged fans to purchase their Scream VII tickets now to “make it happen,” Barrymore added, “With good writing, you can make anything happen.”
In fact, Drew Barrymore has already reprised her role as Casey Becker, but not for a Scream film. In 2020, she donned a blonde wig and a similar sweater for a comedy skit on The Drew Barrymore Show. The video featured Ghostface stalking Casey, reminding her that it’s “that time of year” again. However, this time, Casey simply ignores Ghostface’s phone calls.
Whether Barrymore will participate in another Scream film is still uncertain. While the idea of Casey Becker’s return is entertaining, it’s likely not a safe bet, considering the severity of her injuries in the original Scream.
