Tim Burton Doubts Beetlejuice 3 Will Ever Happen

Beetlejuice 2 is creeping into theaters next week, but don’t count on Tim Burton returning for a third installment if it ever gets made.

Tim Burton Not to Eager to Direct Third Film

In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the 66-year-old director discussed the possibility of a third film in the Beetlejuice franchise, which stars Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder. While it’s uncertain whether the sequel will be a hit, Burton isn’t too optimistic about his involvement in another movie, especially considering the original Beetlejuice was released in 1988, with the sequel coming 36 years later.

“If the same time frame goes on, I’ll be about 100,” Burton joked when asked about a potential third film. “So maybe. I doubt it.”

Even if Beetlejuice 3 does happen sooner rather than later, Burton doesn’t seem eager to direct. He explained that his return for Beetlejuice 2 was driven by his interest in exploring Winona Ryder’s character, Lydia Deetz, at a different stage in life.

“As you get older, you start thinking more about life and its changes,” Burton said. “Lydia begins as a cool teenager. But what happens next? Do you have kids? What are they like? How do you change? These are all things I’ve experienced, so it felt more appropriate to revisit this now, rather than back in 1989.”

Beetlejuice 2 arrives in theaters on September 6, bringing back familiar faces alongside newcomers like Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci.

While it’s unlikely Burton will play a major role in Beetlejuice 3—if it ever gets made—we’ll have a better sense of its prospects after Beetlejuice 2 hits theaters.
