Patty Jenkins’ “Rogue Squadron” film was initially scheduled to be released in December 2023, however, due to development concerns, it has been pulled from Lucasfilm’s release schedule. Jenkins has stated that the film is still in “active development,” but no word on when it will be released. The original concept for the picture, which was situated in the Star Wars world between the original and sequel trilogies and focused on fighter pilots, showed potential and might have been a new addition to the franchise. However, with no firm release date in mind and the desire for an original Star Wars film rather than a spinoff, Lucasfilm should investigate other choices.
Kevin Feige could release his Star Wars film first
Kevin Feige, who is co-writing a Star Wars feature with fellow Marvel Cinematic World creator Michael Waldron, may be a viable choice because his film is not a spinoff or sequel and may cover new ground in the Star Wars universe.
The success of the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” which incorporates similar themes of bounty hunters and fighter pilots, could be one reason for the delays in “Rogue Squadron” development. For the time being, it’s probable that Lucasfilm will choose to focus on the small screen for these types of storytelling. Furthermore, the COVID-19 epidemic has had a severe influence on the film business, causing several movies to be postponed or canceled. The difficulties caused by the pandemic may have also contributed to the delays around “Rogue Squadron.”
Despite the uncertainties surrounding its release, “Rogue Squadron” may find a home in the Star Wars universe. The film, like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” could be published as a limited series on Disney+ or as a spinoff feature. The Star Wars property has a big and devoted fan following, so any chance to explore new tales and characters inside the universe is always appreciated. Even if “Rogue Squadron” does not become the next Star Wars film to enter theaters, it has the potential to be a successful addition to the franchise in some way.
