Marvel Studios is shutting down rumors that it used any kind of “generative artificial intelligence” software to create the latest poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The first trailer for the film dropped Tuesday morning, along with a new poster showing a cheering crowd welcoming Marvel’s First Family. But it didn’t take long for fans to start picking apart the image, pointing out some weird inconsistencies that had them wondering if AI was involved. In response, Marvel told The Wrap that “AI was not used in the creation of these posters.”
Marvel Studios Denying Generative Artificial Intelligence
The poster itself shows an excited crowd waving flags, holding up signs, and flashing cameras at the Fantastic Four. At first glance, it just looks like your typical celebratory scene, but the more you look, the stranger it gets. Multiple people seem to have the exact same face, some arms are positioned in ways that don’t quite make sense, and—perhaps the biggest red flag—some hands have the wrong number of fingers. AI-generated images are infamous for messing up hands, and for many fans, that was enough to raise suspicions.
Of course, there’s also a chance that these mistakes aren’t AI-related at all. Sloppy Photoshop and rushed editing can absolutely cause bizarre little errors like this, and this could just be a case of that. But the backlash shows just how much skepticism exists around AI-generated artwork, especially in Hollywood. Fans aren’t just going to take Marvel’s word for it—they want an explanation for the extra fingers.
Generative AI is an environmental issue
“Generative AI” technology has exploded in the past few years, making it possible to produce text, images, and videos at a fraction of the cost of hiring professionals. But despite all the hype, it’s far from perfect. The software frequently spits out images with unsettling visual errors, and AI-generated text is often full of factual inaccuracies. On top of that, many people are against AI’s use in creative industries, arguing that it steals work from artists and is trained by scraping copyrighted material without permission.
And if that weren’t enough, generative AI is also a major environmental issue. The massive data centers required to run these programs consume huge amounts of energy and fresh water, contributing to carbon emissions and worsening water shortages in some areas.
So where does Marvel actually stand on AI in Hollywood? That remains to be seen. But when it comes to these Fantastic Four posters, the studio insists AI wasn’t involved. Whether fans buy that explanation is another story. The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters on July 25, 2025.
